Three men who use wheelchairs had lived together for a number of years. While home modifications had occurred during this time, the men sought the opportunity for greater independence in and around their home. They enjoyed each other’s company and wanted to move together into a house that was better suited to meet their requirements.
Extensive consultation with the men, their families and guardians highlighted that a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home, built to a Highly Accessible standard, would provide an improved living environment. Plans to relocate commenced and regular visits occurred while Carpentaria completed the SDA construction.
The men moved in September and are enjoying the high quality accessible features available in their new home; cooking meals using the adjustable kitchen bench, being able to move comfortably around oversized bedrooms, the privacy of an ensuite bathroom, and access to a pool combine to provide an improved quality of life for everyone.
Families and guardians also enjoy spending time in the shared living and large outdoor spaces, and barbeques with multiple visitors are a regular occurrence.
