Carpentaria provides Speech Pathology services for children, adolescents and adults.
Our clinicians are based in Darwin and Alice Springs. They regularly travel to deliver services to remote Northern Territory communities across the Top End and Central Australia, including Maningrida, Milingimbi, Ramingining, Galiwin’ku, and Katherine.
How does Speech Pathology support young people aged 0-18?
Carpentaria’s Speech Pathologists can help a child to develop communication skills, including understanding what words mean, using these words and having the speech skills to say them.
Speech Pathologists also provide support with:
- Using communication systems, incorporating gestures, signing, pictures and/or communication devices
- Improving communication and interaction with friends and family
- Developing social skills
- Stuttering and other communication disorders
- Enjoying mealtimes, which cans involve swallowing assessments, helping with texture transition and transitioning from Naso-Gastric (NG) feeding
- Assisting parents, caregivers, friends and teachers to understand what a child is communicating
How does Speech Pathology support adults?
Carpentaria’s Speech Pathologists can support adults with speech, language, communication and swallowing needs.
Speech Pathologists work closely with participants to provide:
- Assessment and prescription of Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices
- Improving communication and interaction with friends, family and members of the community
- Safe oral eating and drinking care plans for people with dysphagia and swallowing difficulties
- Formal speech and language assessment and development of therapy programs
- Communication training programs for those people working closely with participants
"We work with a client who was non-verbal. After she moved to Carpentaria, within a year, she could communicate with gestures. It has made such a difference to her life."
"It is always a good day when a client achieves a new goal - recently a 7-year-old participant of mine said 'mum' for the first time, which was really special."
