Ben* lives with paraplegia and uses a wheelchair to move around his remote community. His wheelchair was long overdue for a review and upgrade, leaving him with a mobility aid that restricted his movement and independence, particularly whenever he tried to wheel across the community’s dirt paths.
While in Darwin for respite, Carpentaria’s Occupational Therapist advocated for Ben’s wheelchair to be reviewed by a local equipment provider, in conjunction with support from the community’s aged care provider. An interpreter was engaged via Zoom for the session, to ensure Ben could participate in discussions and understand instructions and recommendations.
A new fit-for-purpose wheelchair has now been delivered to Ben and he couldn’t be happier with his new-found freedom!
