Partnering with Plastic Free NT

The Cafe at Harry’s Place has made an ongoing commitment to reduce environmental impacts by minimising waste, encouraging reusables, and educating customers and staff on sustainable practices. During July, we partnered with Plastic Free NT for a 3-week ‘reusables’ campaign in the Cafe at Harry’s Place. The 3-week project focused on plastic-free solutions and sustainable choices, encouraging customers to dine in, or to bring reusable packaging when making takeaway purchases.

Establishing Darwin’s first mug library

We are proud to have launched Darwin’s first mug library with the support of Tracey from Plastic Free NT. Launching on July 10, in line with our 3-week reusable promotion, the mug library offers an alternative reusable option for takeaway coffees. This concept is particularly fitting for staff members based at Harry’s Place who access the Café daily and can easily return mugs to the library.

BYO Cup Day results

We were so excited to reach 90% reusables on BYO Cup Day. See below how our customers changed their behaviour in the lead up to BYO Cup Day.

Ongoing sustainability measures

The Café is working towards being named a ‘Plastic Free Champion’, having eliminated all but one of the key plastic items outlined by Plastic Free NT (straws, coffee cups and lids, takeaway containers and lids, cutlery, plates, cups, water bottles and bags). With support from Plastic FreeNT, the Café is currently working to replace plastic bottled water with an aluminium alternative to fulfill all requirements of a Plastic Free Champion business.

Carpentaria’s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan has a focus on growing sustainably across all program areas, and we are committed to continuing to phase out single-use items in the cafe. We’ll keep encouraging you to dine in, BYO cup, or borrow from the mug library when you visit us.
