Official opening
Carpentaria’s first Specialist Disability Accommodation homes were officially opened on Thursday 24 August. Carpentaria board members and CEO Annie Rily welcomed the Honourable Bill Shorten, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the Honourable Ngaree Ah Kit, NT Minister for Disabilities, sector stakeholders, participants, and families to the event. The opening showcased the high-quality design and materials used to construct two SDA homes in Darwin’s northern suburbs.
“I travel all around Australia and haven’t seen an SDA house any better than what I’ve seen here today. It’s a real tribute to the ingenuity of the Territory” Minister Shorten said at the launch.
Sector stakeholders, participants, and families were pleased to view the properties in Wanguri and Wagaman. The parent of a Carpentaria participant shared that homes like this will provide comfort to aging parents who want to know their child’s care and forever home is secure, commenting “we appreciate the homes’ design, technology, and attention to detail, that go over and above the minimum requirements”.
Future builds
At the launch, Minister Ah Kit announced the allocation of additional blocks of land to Carpentaria to develop Specialist Disability Accommodation. Carpentaria’s next SDA properties will be built in Rapid Creek and Jingili in Darwin’s northern suburbs, and in Gillen, Alice Springs.
Minister Ah Kit announced “Carpentaria have been successful in two more land grants from my government. We will continue to ensure that land becomes available because we know that there are many Territorians, not just in Darwin and Alice Springs, but right across the Northern Territory who need and deserve the quality home that we are standing in today.”
These properties are currently in the development stages and can be designed to meet the needs of interested individuals.
Getting SDA right in the Territory
Carpentaria is committed to providing innovative and sector leading accommodation options for people with complex disability. Boutique designs use evidence-based advice and individual needs are supported with the latest assistive technology.
The completed homes, built to meet the Robust and High Physical Support categories, can each accommodate 3 people living with disability. The homes offer oversized bedrooms, private ensuites and courtyards, ample shared spaces, pools, and a sensory room in the Robust home.
Carpentaria has a strong history of delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) services to people with disability and will support the residents moving into current and future SDA homes. These high-quality, purpose-built homes will lead to increased independence and quality of life for people with complex disabilities.
Investment in the economy
As a non-profit, for-purpose organisation, Carpentaria is proud to have re-invested back into the community through the construction of superior quality SDA homes.
- Carpentaria has invested considerable funds into the construction of 2 completed homes, exceeding the minimum requirements to ensure participants directly benefit from living in a high quality home
- Approximately 30 local contractors and suppliers have been engaged in the design and construction process of the two completed homes
